HOW HID LAMPS WORK AND COMMON PROBLEMS

HID stands for high-intensity discharge, a term for the electric arc that produces the visible light in sealed bulb containing gaseous elements.  Automotive HID lamps are commonly called "xenon headlamps", though they are actually metal halide lamps that contain xenon gas.

Almost all HID lamps run on alternating current (AC) power, which requires that an electronic control module be used to convert the direct current (DC) power from the car battery to AC. The electronic control modules also perform as an igniter and ballast. The igniter allows enough power to “spark” and ionize the xenon gas, creating a low electrical resistance pathway for additional current to flow for the lights to instantly turn on and be bright.  The ballast senses when the power can be dropped to attain a flicker-free, stable arc producing bright light.

HID HEAD LIGHT PROBLEMS

Since the HID headlamps are powered and controlled by electronic systems, problems can be difficult to diagnose, but symptoms include:

SAFETY ISSUES WITH HEADLIGHTS

Having a car’s headlights turn off at night can be a serious safety issue, as the driver’s nighttime vision will be impacted, as well as the ability for other vehicles and even pedestrians to see a car without proper headlight illumination. Also, unexpected flashing of headlights may cause issues with oncoming traffic as well as vehicles directly in front of the problematic car.
